Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay has for the first time made it to the list of the world’s top 200 universities, QS World University Rankings 2018. In the rankings, IIT-B has jumped from its position of 219 last year to 179, joining IIT Delhi and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in the league of the top 200 institutes of the world.While IIT Delhi has moved up from last year’s 185th rank to 172nd this time, the IISc has climbed up 38 places from 190th last year to occupy the 152nd spot. It is the first time in over a decade that three of the country’s universities have made it to the top 200.
“The improved ranking is the reflection of continuous improvement of the quality of education and research at IIT-B”, remarked IIT-B Director Devang Khakhar on the achievement.
The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) WUR, a British agency, ranks higher educational institutes, compares top universities in the world based on six performances parametres across for sectors like Research, Teaching, Employability and Internationalism, plus a considerable 40 points weightage to the institute’s stature.The results released on 8th June’17 show IIT-B ranking second in India with an overall score of 49.7, 62.3 in academic reputation, 77.9 in Employment Reputation, 50.8 in citation per faculty, 32.1 in faculty-student ratio, 3.7 in international faculty and 2 in international students. Among all the parameters, Employment Reputation was the strongest for IIT-B with a 102 rank globally
Leading the table, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) topped the rankings for the sixth consecutive year, followed by Stanford University and Harvard University, California Institute of Technology and University of Cambridge, the UK-based ranking agency QS said
A number of 26,000 universities were surveyed globally.As per an HT report, overall, 20 Indian institutions have been included in the ranking table this year, six more than last year that has a list of the world's 959 top universities.Considering there are around 26000 universities worldwide, latest rankings have put IISc, IIT-D and IIT-B together among the top one percent universities globally.
