Mr. P. L. Bongirwar received his B. Tech. (Honours) from the Civil Engineering Department in the year 1967, and went on to complete his M. Tech in Structural Engineering in the year 1969.
Through the Competitive Examination conducted by the Maharashtra Public Service Commission, Mr. Bongirwar joined the Public Works Department as Executive Engineer rising to Superintending Engineer and Chief Engineer. At present, Mr. Bongirwar is holding the post equivalent to Secretary, Public Works Department and is working as Joint Managing Director with Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd., Mumbai. In his present capacity, Mr. Bongirwar is in- charge of the prestigious Mumbai-Pune Expressway, 50 flyovers in Mumbai and 29 ROBs in the State.

Mr. Bongirwar has evolved new innovative design and construction methodology. To mention some of these noteworthy and cost-effective ones; Semi-circle Arch Bridge for vented causeway, Bridge cum Bandhara for River on Purna near village Kherkhada, which also won the award of Indian Institutes of Bridge Engineers as the "Innovative Bridge Design".
Mr. Bongirwar was honoured with the UNDP fellowship to study the subject of "Computer Application in Bridge Design" at the University of Maryland, Washington. He also visited Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia & Bangkok to study the implementation of BOT works.
The Late S. B. Joshi Memorial Award for the year 1998 was awarded to Mr. Bongirwar by the Institute of Engineers.
Mr. Bongirwar has served in various capacities in several IRC committees and Study Groups. He has co-authored a book on "Limit State Design Hand Book for R.C. Members" and has also written a PWD handbook on RCC works. As also he has contributed several technical articles. |

Mr. Alexander Luke, Managing Director, Gujarat Alkalies & Chemicals Ltd., completed his B. Tech from the Dept. of Civil Engineering in the year 1971. After working in CIDCO and NDDB for some time, he joined the All India Services in 1975 in the Gujarat cadre.
Mr. Luke, who has gained recognition for his capabilities and integrity as an administrator, has earlier held the position of the Fisheries Commissioner (Gujarat), Labour Commissioner (Gujarat) and successively Managing Director of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd.. and Gujarat Industrial Investment Corporation.
Mr. Luke has worked extensively towards the revival and transformation of institutions through ethical yet effective leadership. According to him, "Much of what appears as severe and irreconcilable differences on any proposed action in the public field in our country can be traced to doubts about the integrity and trustworthiness of the people proposing such measures."
Mr. Alexander Luke intends to concentrate his efforts on his other vocation, farming when he returns to his village in a few years |

Mr. Ajit C. Shelat has completed his B.Tech., in Electrical Engineering in 1977 and M.Tech. in Computer Science from IIT Bombay in 1980. After a few years as Computer Maintenance Engineer at IIT Bombay, Mr. Shelat joined the Electronic Business Equipment Division of Godrej and Boyce Manufacturing Company in 1982 as a Senior Development Officer and went on to hold various key positions later.
During his tenure as Manager of R&D for the Symnphony family of workstations, the Symphony B, C and D workstations based on MC68020 and MC68030 processors as well as the Symphony 860 workstation based on the 64-bit inter processor i80860 were brought out. As Business Manager of the Networking Products Group, Mr. Shelat's efforts resulted in successful development of networking products such as terminal servers, x-windows emulation package for PCs and a TCP/IP package for PCs.
Mr. Shelat set up Rimo Technologies Pvt. Ltd. in 1995 which was focused on services in the area of networking software and systems, which later teamed up with SwitchOn Networks in Milpitas, CA, USA. Mr. Shelat became a co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of SwitchOn Networking India. His team came out with a product idea for developing a high performance packet classification engine, which was revolutionary. Mr. Shelat and his group have five patents with USA on packet classification.
SwitchOn was acquired by PMC-Sierra, a leading communication and networking chip company, for $ 450 million in November 2000. This was big news in the computer industry and hailed as one of the largest takeovers in the country. Mr. Shelat has continued his close association with IIT Bombay. |

Mr. Jairam Ramesh, after obtaining his B.Tech from IIT Bombay in 1975, studied Public Management at the Carnegie Mellon University (1975-77) and spent a year at MIT thereafter studying technology policy, economics, engineering and management.
Mr. Jairam Ramesh, is Secretary, Economic Affairs Department of the Congress Party, New Delhi as also Deputy Chairman, Karnataka Planning Board and Economic Advisor, Government of Chattisgarh. He is a Member of the Economic Development Council of Rajasthan and has earlier been invited by the Government of Andhra Pradesh to serve on its Economic Advisory Council.
Mr. Jairam Ramesh has been Advisor to the Finance Minister (1996-97), to the Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission (1992-94) and to the Prime Minister during 1991 and 1987-89. He also served in the Ministry of Industry and other economic departments of the Central Government and has been entrusted with numerous special assignments, for example in J & K (1993-95), for reorganizing India's international trade agencies (1990), for implementing the technology missions (1987-89), for reorganizing the CSIR (1986) and for analyzing energy policy (1983-85). He played a major role in the formulation and implementation of India's economic reforms in 1991.
Author of many key government reports in diverse areas like energy, technology, capital goods, industrial policy, telecom etc, Mr. Jairam Ramesh also writes for the weekly magazine India Today and has anchored a number of popular television programmes on business and economy.
Mr. Jairam Ramesh serves on the boards of a number of public institutions in India and abroad, has been a founding member of the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad and is a member of the International Council of the Asia Society. |

Mr. J. K. Tandon, was amongst the first batch to graduate from IIT Bombay, obtaining his B. Tech in the year 1962 from the Metallurgical Engineering Department.
At present Mr. Tandon is the Joint Managing Director and CEO of Jindal Vijayanagar Steel Ltd., Karnataka. Prior to that he has worked with MAMC Durgapur, Hindustan Zinc Ltd., Udaipur; Zinc Smelter Debari as Works Manager; Khandelwal Group as Executive President; Sunflag Iron & Steel Company Ltd., Nagpur as Director & Chief Executive; and with ESSAR Steel Ltd., Hazira as Director & Chief Executive. His commitment for creative work, focus on result oriented activities and dynamic leadership built the highly motivated teams and quality organisations everywhere. Mr. Tandon has been associated with several projects from "Conceptualization to Stabilization". His first project was in Durgapur – Mining & Allied Machinery Project.
Mr. Tandon is actively associated with various Professional Bodies as a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India), a Member of the Indian Institute of Metals and Member of Iron & Steel Society of USA.
Mr. Tandon is the recipient of the prestigious Tata Gold Medal of the Indian Institute of Metals in the year 2000 for his significant contributions to the Metallurgical Industries in India. |

Mr. Edul Minoo Daver is a prominent personality in the field of powder metallurgy who has held various management positions, rising to the position of President and Co-owner of AcuPowder International LLC, USA.
Following his B.Tech. at IITB, Mr. Daver did his M.S. from University of Wiscosin in 1967, completed his M.B.A. from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1977, and Owner President Management Programme from Harvard University in 1999.
He joined Alcan Powders & Pigments in the R&D and Technical areas, obtaining 3 patents along the way. Becoming Plant Manager in 1980, and President in 1988, Daver's latent entrepreneurial vision made him proactively approach Alcan about buying the Powders division. He purchased the company in 1995, along with seven other key employees.
A new company, AcuPowder International, LLC, was a very risky, highly leveraged buyout venture, at a debt to equity ratio of 60:1. Daver, as President and CEO, implemented "Open Book Management" techniques and sharing 20% of pretax profits with all employees. The employees responded, and the results have been better than expected. The turnover of the company was over US $ 30 million in 1999.
In early 2000 an opportunity to purchase a competitor , Pyron Metal Powders, was pursued aggressively and the deal consummated in April 2000. AcuPowder now has the dominant North American market share for copper-based powders.
In 1980 Mr. Daver is also Director Metal Powder Industries Federation, and Director, World Zarathusti Chamber of Commerce, and active in IIT Bombay alumni activities. He has also taken a proactive role in safety and environmental issues. |

Mr. Manohar Parrikar did his B.Tech. in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Bombay in 1978 and then went into business. Mr. Parrikar is an entrepreneur who has two factories at Goa, producing hydraulic equipments.
His career took a turn when he went into politics in 1988. Mr. Parrikar is a National Executive Member of Bharatiya Janata Party and was General Secretary and Spokesman of Bharatiya Janata Party, Goa Pradesh from 1994-2000. He was Member Legislative Assembly of Goa 1994-1999 from Panaji Constituency; Leader of the Opposition of Goa Legislative Assembly from June '99 to November '99.
In October 2000 he became the Chief Minister of Goa. |

Mr. Rajiv L. Gupta obtained his B. Tech degree in the year 1967 from the Mechanical Engineering Department. Thereafter he completed his M.S. in Operations Research from Cornell University (1969) and an M.B.A. in Finance from Drexel University (1972).
Mr. Gupta is currently the Chairman & CEO, Rohm & Haas Company. He had joined the company in the year 1971 as a financial analyst and also served as special assistant to the president of the company for a period of two years.
In 1979, Mr. Gupta worked as financial manager of the U.K. subsidiary, then as strategic planning director for the region and finally as assistant manager for the company's substantial operations in France.
Mr. Gupta was named business manager for Ion Exchange Resigns in Europe in the year 1984 and took on the responsibilities of business unit director for Plastics in Europe in 1987 and later the worldwide business.
Mr. Gupta was elected to the Board of Governors and named Vice Chairman with effect from January 1999. He went on to become Chairman and CEO from October 1999.
Mr. Gupta is also on the board of trustees for the International House. He is a member of the board of Technitrol, Unisys Corporation and the Chemical Manufacturers Association. He is also a member of the Drexel University Advisory Council. | |

Dr. Ramesh Chandra Agarwal completed his B. Tech. from the Electrical Engineering Department in the year 1968 and was the first Electrical Engineering graduate to get a gold medal. He obtained his Ph.D. from Rice University in the area of Digital Signal Processing and was given the Best Paper Award (1974) by the Signal Processing Society the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), for his doctoral papers published in their transactions.
His post doctoral position at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center saw him working on mathematical problems underlying research in molecular structures. The computing methods he developed are still being used in laboratories. He had a brief stay later, at IIT Delhi as an associate professor.
Dr. Agarwal was appointed IBM Fellow in the year 1997, which is the highest technical recognition given by IBM. Currently there are approximately 50 IBM fellows worldwide and the appointments are made "in recognition of their distinguished and sustained technical achievements in engineering, programming, science and technology." As an IBM fellow, freedom is provided to select and pursue work in the areas of one's own interest.
During his research career, Dr. Agarwal authored about 100 papers, received about a dozen patents and several awards. His current research activities are in the areas of databases, data mining and computational biology and he is excited by the "gene expression" problem in computational biology. | |
