Introducing Prof. Balamurugan Palaniappan

It gives us immense pleasure to welcome Prof. Balamurugan Palaniappan to the IIT Bombay family. He is a valuable addition to the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR).

Prof. Palaniappan was a PhD student at Intelligent Systems Lab, headed byProf. Shirish K. Shevade, in the department of Computer Science and Automation, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. He has completed his Masters in Engineering at Computer Science and Automation, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India and had his Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology from Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, India. Previously, he has worked as a Teaching Assistant for Big Data course,Introduction to Machine Learning course by Prof. Florence d’Alché-Buc and Probability and Statistics course by Dr. Indrajit Bhattacharya.

His primary research theme is to develop efficient optimization methods and algorithms for various machine learning, data mining problems which involves investigation of both the theoretical and practical aspects of optimization methodologies. The interplay between statistical, learning theoretic, algorithmic and probabilistic aspects of machine learning models also fascinates him. He is also interested in looking into applications of machine learning and data mining in relatively less explored directions. He is also looking into theoretical and practical aspects of Deep Learning tools.

At IIT Bombay, Prof.Palaniappan is looking for highly motivated graduate (MSc, MTech and PhD) students who wish to contribute to these research areas.
