Dean's Message

Dear Friend,

Greetings from IIT Bombay!

Every year, the month of May experiences a mixed set of emotions- anxiety, focus, and adrenaline rush on one end for the ongoing end semester exams and sheer glee, exhilaration, and excitement on the flip side for the coming Summer break which has been extended till 29th July. The significance of break varies for the students. While the freshmen enjoy what’s notoriously termed as their ‘last real vacation’ with some precocious ones already gearing up for summer projects and internships, the sophomores get busy in figuring life out. For the later years, the concept of break blurs into just a slightly longer holiday with them grappling with internships and projects. For those pursuing masters and Ph.D., it’s a whole different story. We certainly can’t forget the graduating batch. Yet another academic year has gone by and we wish our graduating students a successful and fulfilling career and life ahead.

The ‘Faculty Alumni Network (FAN)’ India Symposium and the Distinguished Alumni (DA) India Meet were held on 6th and 7th April 2019 at Taj Exotica Resort in Goa. The Faculty Alumni Network (FAN) is a community of IIT Bombay faculty and alumni with backgrounds as researchers, university faculty, students, and administrators. FAN’s goals are to assist IIT Bombay in its efforts to become a word class research and teaching centre. The theme of the FAN India Symposium 2019 was New and Advanced Materials and Sustainable Chemical Sciences. The ‘Distinguished Alumni India Meet 2019’ was held on 7th April 2019. The DA Meet is a select gathering of IIT Bombay’s most illustrious alumni who meet annually to discuss the Institute’s priorities and plans and also give their opinions and suggestions on the course of action going forward. This year, four brainstorming sessions were conducted primarily focussing on a) enhancing the students’ experience b) strengthening faculty and research c) building a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship d)creating a world-class campus.

Colorful festivities were held all through the month.  The Cultural Council organized the Performing arts festival which is a series of stage plays performed by the students. It is always a great presentation of drama, music with a real essence of different cultures. The first prize was bagged by the play “Kuttay”.

The academic council launched an online portal SURP (Summer Undergraduate Research Program) on 15th April 2019 to aid the students who are interested in taking up research projects in summer/during the semester and who are willing to work under professors.

The generous contributions received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute help in making an important difference in our endeavor to pursue global excellence. The contributions towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
