Dean's Message

Dear Friend,

Greetings from IIT Bombay!

We warmly welcomed the new batch of postgraduate and undergraduate students to our prestigious Institute which marked the beginning of a new and memorable phase in their lives. We are very pleased to inform you that IIT Bombay continues to be the most preferred choice of students, with 64 of the top 100 JEE rankers joining the Institute. We heartily welcome all the new students and wish them all a prosperous and successful term ahead.

We are currently inviting nominations for Distinguished Service Awards and Chapter Service Awards 2019 for consideration. IIT Bombay presents 'Distinguished Service Awards' every year to IITB alumni who have contributed in a very notable and sustained manner to the progress of the Institute. From last year the Institute has also started 'Chapter Service Awards' to recognize IITB alumni who have contributed in a very notable and sustained manner to the progress of their respective chapters. The awards are presented during the Alumni Day celebrations in December. I request you to send nominations for both 'Distinguished Service Award' and 'Chapter Service Award' for consideration this year. Please email your nominations to dean.acr.office@iitb.ac.in with a cc to Ms. Indu Biswal - indu.biswal@iitb.ac.in  latest by August 15, 2019.

The Institute hosted the grand finale of Smart India Hackathon 2019 - Hardware Edition during July 8-12, 2019 at the Computer Centre, IIT Bombay. Smart India Hackathon 2019 – Hardware Edition, an event by the MHRD's Innovation Cell (MIC), was a five-day non-stop event inaugurated by Prof. A. K. Suresh, Deputy Director, IIT Bombay where participating teams from all over India built a prototype to give solutions against the problem statements provided by various ministries and companies. The competition was for undergraduate students from institutions all over India selected by MHRD's Innovation Cell earlier.

IIT Bombay celebrated Van Mahotsav – the annual tree plantation drive on July 13, 2019 on its campus. About 850 saplings were planted by school students and teachers of Kendriya Vidyalaya and Campus School (both located within IIT Bombay campus) and the students, faculty and staff of the Institute this year. Prof. A.K. Suresh, Deputy Director, Academic and Infrastructural Affairs, IIT Bombay spoke on the significance of trees in our lives and encouraged the student participants to develop an interest in building the greener environment by planting more trees.

I am glad to inform you that IIT Bombay received the scroll for being the best-ranked university in India from Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) at the hands of Hon'ble HRD Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ at Shastri Bhavan, New Delhi on July 2, 2019. Prof. Milind Atrey, Dean (R&D), represented IIT Bombay at the event. Mr. Pokhriyal also inaugurated a new brand hostel, Hostel 18 at the campus in an endeavour to help more students study at the Institute.

IIT Bombay was invited to attend the U7 Summit in Paris, an international partnership from university presidents in order to find solutions and make a positive difference to the world. The inaugural summit was held in Paris on July 9 and 10 and IIT Bombay was the only Institute to be invited from India. The student tech-team,  IIT Bombay racing, after a year of consistent efforts presented their entry at the Formula Student UK 2019 which is a student engineering competition held annually in UK at the famous Silverstone Racing Circuit. The team successfully unveiled their last car in the Evo series, the 'EvoK' on July 15, which really ‘evoked’ a lot of emotions from the past and IIT Bombay stands tall, high and proud with the team.

The last month witnessed intellectually and physically stimulating lecture, which were based on the topic “The growth of the Himalaya and Tibet and the evolution of Asian climate” by Prof. Peter Molnar from Dept. of Geological Sciences, University of Colorado, USA.

Organised by the Student Alumni Relations Cell, SARCasm is an online cryptic quiz with questions exclusively pertaining to IIT Bombay.

The Institute also continues to strengthen its international relations. We have signed Memorandum of Understanding with Academia Sinica, Taiwan and University of Basque Country, Spain to promote international cooperation in the fields of education, research and social services through the exchange of faculty members, researchers, students, academic materials and other information as a means to promote future institutional cooperation.

The Institute continues to attract outstanding talent as new faculty members. We are pleased to welcome Prof. Saptarshi Ghosh to the IIT Bombay family. He joined the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) as an Assistant Professor in March, 2019. Prof. Ghosh’s research interests broadly lie in the areas of Game Theory, Applied Microeconomics, Development Economics, Political Economy, and Public Policy. We wish him success in the years to come.

The generous contribution received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute helps make an important difference in our endeavour to pursue global excellence. The contribution towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
