Dean's Message

Dear Friends,

Greetings from IIT Bombay!

IIT Bombay's month of October is going to be filled with a lot of activities and as the major festivals of India line up this month, it is only going to increase the excitement and enthusiasm inside the students. This September saw IIT Bombay acquire a new lease of life, as students engaged in preparations for their mid-semester examinations with utmost dedication and aplomb.

IIT Bombay conferred prestigious teaching awards on the occasion of the 61st Teachers Day celebration of the Institute held on September 9, which witnessed Prof. Varun Sahni,  Vice-Chancellor at Goa University who was invited as the Chief Guest. He presented 'Prof. S. P. Sukhatme Award for Excellence in Teaching’ and Dr. P. K. Patwardhan Technology Development Award' to selected faculty members. Congratulating the awardees, Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director of IIT Bombay concluded that IIT Bombay continues to be a coveted destination for UG and PG studies. “Among 23 IITs in the country, 47 out of top 50 rankers and 63 of top 100 rankers in JEE 2019 have joined IIT Bombay”.

It gives me immense pleasure to tell you that IIT Bombay has advanced up in Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Graduate Employability Rankings from the range 141-150 last year to 111-120 this year in 2020. The results were released on September 19 by QS, a British company. The Institute has a score of 67.8 in Employer Reputation, 66.9 in Alumni Outcomes, 23.7 in Employer – Student Connections, 51.6 in Partnerships with Employers, and 6.9 in Graduate Employment Rate. Among these six parameters, Employer Reputation indicated the strongest one for IIT Bombay with a rank of 80 globally.

In the IIT Council Meeting on September 27, the HRD minister, Mr. Ramesh Pokhriyal, inaugurated a common portal for admission to IITs and IISc for international applicants. Now the international applicants aspiring to study post-graduate programs in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have a single portal, where they can apply for admission for the academic year starting July 2020. The international applicant portal (https://intapp.iitb.ac.in) provides a convenient interface to view and apply to multiple programs simultaneously. Applicants will be informed of their selection through the portal, and they can accept anyone's offer and proceed with the other formalities of entry into the country and admission process at the chosen institute.

It is with great joy and pride that I invite you to this year’s edition of Alumination, which is to be held on October 12-13. It is the Student Alumni Relation Cell’s most remarkable venture which serves as IIT-B's largest platform for bilateral exchange between its alumni and students on a spectrum spanning Career Guidance, Corporate Exposure, Life Learning, and Motivational Talks. I look forward to your invaluable participation in huge numbers, as students eagerly await a chance of a lifetime to imbibe and emulate the example of alumni who have made it to very high places.

Techfest, IIT Bombay brings the 4th edition of the Techfest Cyclothon on October 6. It involves a 12 km long pedaling across a route that will provide the participants with a glimpse of the natural beauty of the lush green IIT Bombay campus. Its aim is to motivate the participants to include this eco-friendly mode of transport in their daily lives and take the first step towards stopping air pollution. A week after the Cyclothon, Aavhan, IIT Bombay, in association with Citizen India will come up with the third edition of the IIT Bombay Half Marathon on October 13. This year, efforts have been made to contribute to our Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative, 'Jal Shakti Abhiyan' by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Department of Water Resources, RD & GR for water conservation as responsible citizens of India.

IIT Bombay signed a Memorandum of Understanding with The Technical University of Denmark, The Royal University of Bhutan and Schlumberger Asia Services Limited, India with the aim to establish long-term collaborative relationships and to help students in the exchange program.

The Institute continues to attract outstanding talent as new faculty members. Several have joined IIT Bombay in the past. We are pleased to bring a short introduction to these new faculty members in our newsletter.

We firmly believe that with your constant perseverance and tenacity, we can make a mark in the world as an Institute of eminence. Generous contributions received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute are key to bolstering our endeavors to pursue global excellence. Contributions towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of the utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
