Dean's Message

Dear Friend,

Greetings from IIT Bombay!

I am very delighted to present the December issue of our newsletter. The onset of winter is here and with it an atmosphere of celebration too. The students of IIT-B have been through with their End Term examinations and even though the official term has ended, would be found tinkering throughout the campus, engaged in a multitude of technical and student activities. This goes on to show that our campus restricts its wholesome education neither by months nor syllabus.

It is my immense pleasure to inform you all that Prof. Subimal Ghosh, of the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Bombay, has been awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize 2019 as a  recognition of his significant contributions to the understanding of how land surface processes influence the Indian monsoon, as well as for improving regional monsoon simulations and predictions. Prof. R B Sunoj of the Department of Chemistry of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay also received the 2019 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for his outstanding contributions in providing molecular level insights on organic reaction mechanisms. Also, Prof. Sunita Sarawagi of the Computer Science Department, IIT Bombay, was awarded the prestigious Infosys prize that honors scientists, researchers and engineers of Indian origin for their pioneering contributions towards their respective fields.

Constitution Day was celebrated on November 26 in the presence of Institute functionaries Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director, Prof. A.K. Suresh, Dy. Director (AIA), Prof. P.M. Mujumdar, Dy. Director (FEA), Prof. K.P. Kaliappan, Dean (Faculty), and others, at the ground floor foyer of Main Building of the Institute. The reading of the preamble and the pledge administration (both in Hindi and English) took place at the scheduled time 10:45 am in front of faculty, students, and staff. The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay also commemorated the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel by observing National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas) on October 31, 2019.

A delegation of 15 Journalists from Bhutan visited IIT Bombay on November 22, 2019. The visit was part of the familiarization tour organized by the External Publicity and Public Diplomacy Division of Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. On November 22, the Russian Spaceman Sergey Revin visited to deliver a lecture as part of "Days of Moscow in India". As a part of Vigilance Awareness Week, the staff of IITB took a pledge to promote probity in public life and to achieve a corruption-free society. The Vigilance Cell of IIT Bombay also organized an essay writing competition on "Integrity: A Way Of Life" for the campus community.

The Institute organized an Institute Distinguished Lecture in Chemical Engineering (in memory of Professor C.V. Seshadri) on November 29. The speaker, Prof. Ajit Sapre, Group President (R&T), Reliance Industries Ltd., spoke on the topic of “Technology initiatives by Reliance Industries to meet global challenges”. The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay also organized a talk by Dr. Goldin Quardos, senior scientist at SACON, Coimbatore, on November 23 on the topic “Wild Side of IIT Bombay” and some other lectures were also organised at the institute level. 

It gives us immense pleasure to welcome Prof. Balamurugan Palaniappan to the IIT Bombay family. He is a valuable addition to the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR). IIT Bombay signed Memorandum of Understanding with Distance State University, Costa Rica, Sciences Po, France and Myanmar Institute of Information Technology with the aim of increasing exchange program of students, faculty and other research scholars to increase the bond between the two parties.

I also again invite you to the Institute campus on December 22 on the occasion of Alumni Day. Feel the impact of your alma mater's work in the world through short talks by experts and experience the melting pot of plethora of exhilarating and invigorating activities. In addition to this, multiple reunions for various batches of the Institute are also planned which will be conducted as per the following schedule:

20 to 22 December- Silver Jubilee Reunion of the Class of 1994

20 to 22 December- Decennial Reunion of B.Tech. Class of 2009/ DD Class of 2010

21 to 22 December - Reunion of Class of 1979

30 December to 2nd January - Reunion of Class of 1982

30 December to 2nd January - Reunion of Class of 1982(USD)

Major events are lined up in the Institute in the upcoming month with IIT Bombay to organize the 4th Inter IIT Cultural Meet from 20-22 December which will witness huge participation from the IITs all over India. Mood Indigo, Asia's largest college cultural festival will be organised from 26-29 December. It is a melting pot of Indian and global culture, a launchpad for upcoming artists, a spectacular showcase of talent, an epitome of incredible human experience: where you can never see it all, but what you do see lasts a lifetime, where friendships are born and memories are made amidst the gleam of several bonfires as the nights intensify.

Only with constant perseverance and tenacity, we can make a mark in the world as an Institute of eminence. Generous contributions received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute are key to bolstering our endeavours to pursue global excellence. Contributions towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
