Seminar on 'Value Extraction & Waste Management in Iron & Steel Industry in India'

The Centre of Excellence in Steel Technology (CoEST), IIT Bombay organised a 2-day seminar on Value Extraction & Waste Management in Iron & Steel Industry in India. Dr. Aruna Sharma, Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Government of India graced this event with her presence as she inaugurated this 2 day seminar on 30th January 2017. The seminar proved to be an enriching experience for many as it saw a line of thoughtful lectures and engaging panel discussions lined up for maximum value addition in the steel industry . Prof. A.K Suresh, Deputy Director (AIA), IIT Bombay delivered the opening lecture on Leaching and carbonation possibilities of Iron & steelmaking slags which was then followed by a engaging panel discussion. The seminar was graced by many prominent personalities in steel industry like Mr. P.K. Mohapatra, Vice President, JSW; Dr. Atanu Ranjan Pal, Chief of Process Research, R&D Dept., Tata Steel Ltd, Mr. Suresh Choudhary, MD Harsco India, Mr. Amit Srivastava, MD, EcoMaister India. 

A broad spectrum of topics which included “ Overall Solid Waste Management”, “ LD Slag Utilization”,  “Processing of Toxic Dust and Sludges Generated from Steel Plant “, ”Micropellet and Mill scale Briquette Technology” and many others were covered during this event. Mr. G.D. Maheshwari, DGM & HoG, RDCIS-SAIL shared his views on the opportunities for improving Solid Waste Utilization in Integrated Steel Plants.

During this event, Prof. N.N. Vishwanathan of IIT Bombay delivered a lecture on “Reduction of Ferro-Alloy consumption by direct alloying of Mo and Cr in Steel”. It was an informative two day event where both, the faculty and students alike, got to know about to the current industrial problems and a few remedies implemented by some of the prominent minds in the Steel Industry  of India.
