We welcome Prof. Ritayan Mitra to the IIT Bombay family; he is a professor at the Interdisciplinary Programme in Education Technology and he joined IIT Bombay in 2017. Prof. Mitra completed his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego, and later worked as a Postdoctoral fellow at North Carolina State University and University of Colorado, Boulder before coming to IIT Bombay as a faculty in 2017. His research interests span in multiple dimensions, namely biosensors, engineering and science education, smart classrooms. Speaking enthusiastically about his area of specialization and developments in this field in the recent time, Prof. Mitra said that his research being highly interdisciplinary, he draws ideas from several fields. In terms of technology, one recent development that he spoke about was the advent of wearable sensing technology. Wearable technology is starting to measure subtle changes in affective/cognitive states in humans and as the cost of production goes down such technologies will be leveraged for smart classrooms, intelligent tutoring systems etc. When asked about his plans on how to engage students inside and outside the classroom, he elaborated on several research-backed and easily implementable techniques. Prof. Ritayan Mitra is quite an avid photographer and spends quality time engaging in photography.
