The Centre of Excellence in Steel Technology, IIT Bombay organized the lecture of the “Steel Colloquium Series” on February 5, 2019. The details of the lecture are given below:
Title: “Atmospheric Corrosion of Galvanized Steel and Zinc Alloy Steel”

Hot dipped galvanized (HDG) steel and zinc alloyed steel such as ZnAl and ZnAlMg (ZM) are used in building and automobile industries. In the case of Zn coated steel with Al and Mg, there is still scarce information on the long term performance under atmospheric weathering conditions. Although large efforts have been made to study the corrosion products formed on zinc under atmospheric weathering conditions, very few data exists on HDG and zinc alloyed coated products. The work reported in the lecture is a part of a larger research programme where steel with different coatings are exposed on a worldwide basis on well characterized exposure sites in Europe, Asia and North America for extended periods of time.
Study of corrosion products after exposure upto 4 years by XRD, FTIR-spectroscopy and SEM-EDS, showed that suplphate/carbonate ratio was highly dependent on exposure site. The ratio was higher for ZM coated steel as compared to HDG. The lecture presents and discusses some of the interesting results.
About the speaker :
Prof. Dominique Thierry obtained his PhD in corrosion science from the Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris, France in 1988. He is Assistant Professor (Docent) at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) Sweden since 1993. He is author/co-author of more than 200 scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and several book chapters. He has worked as technical director of Swedish Corrosion Institute in Stockholm. He is currently the Managing Director of the French Corrosin Institute at Brest, France.
