The Design & Degree Show is a much-awaited event in the annual calendar of the Institute. It is a showcase of the design projects that are a synergistic output of human-centred thinking, critical problem solving, deeper aesthetic understanding and foresight, inculcated and added up in the design arsenal of the graduating students of Industrial Design Centre, IIT Bombay.
The DDS 2019 was inaugurated by Prof. Sudhakar Nadkarni who has the distinction of having initiated three major institutions in the country and was instrumental in starting the Industrial Design Centre at IIT Bombay in 1969. The event showcased the design projects by the outgoing batch of Master of Design (MDes) students of five streams and the first outgoing batch of Bachelor of Design (BDes) of IDC School of Design, IIT Bombay.
DDS’19 theme ‘Form and Re-form’ celebrated the ‘ever-evolving’ spirit of design that perpetually aimed towards creating better and overarching solutions for the challenges that our present faces and the future holds. Interdisciplinary projects from the first graduating bachelors batch were shown in just three days.
Anagha Rao from B.des final year attempted to make people conscious of the frustrating and time-consuming experience faced by dyslexic people hoping that it would encourage conversations surrounding dyslexia using the project “Empathy and Awareness about Dyslexia in Indian Society through an illustrated storybook."
People witnessed the glory and richness of Indian classical dance through physical and digital interactions. "Depiction of Natyashastra using playful interactions" by Annu Verma of interaction design was aimed for us to take away more than just knowledge, the experience.
Aimed to make competent designs by considering environmental and emotional factors, Anshuman Dixit, a mobility and vehicle design final year graduating student, presented a mobility solution for our Indian army soldiers in dreaded Siachen conditions.
Sustainability is the need of the hour for a better future in this world. Shivani Nayak introspected and experienced self-reliance and sustainable means of life through weaving, through her final M. Des graduation project, 'Cotton to Cloth: Understanding self-reliance by working with hands.' Shivani Nayak, a Communication Design student at IDC, presented her introspective journey with weaving at the Design and Degree Show 2019 at VMCC, IIT Bombay.
An apt salute to the long-standing legacy of storytelling, mythology has been a vital part of humankind. IDC-an animator and storyteller, Abhishek Soni, screened his film, 'Dwarka Dahan' which brought mythology alive, as part of his final graduation project titled, 'Indian History and Mythology' at the Design and Degree Show 2019.
'Geometry kit for Visually Impaired Kids' is an innovative and humane project, from the M. Des student, Minal Agarwal, of Industrial design's graduating batch of IDC. People got a glimpse of the project at the show.

The event was attended by professionals from different streams of design, writing, art, media, academia, design students from various Institutes and organizations, academicians as well as the general public interested in design.
