IIT-B Racing Team won multiple awards at FSUK, which saw 73 teams participate from around the world
The students at IIT Bombay Racing have hit a significant milestone on the road to progress. The team has put in their best result yet, at the Formula Student UK Competition, hosted by IMechE.
This year, the competition was held online due to COVID related restrictions, but that did not hinder the team’s ability to shine. The team ranked 1st Overall, in the Engineering Design Event. To put that into perspective, IITB Racing team had the best-designed car among 73 teams from around the globe.
The IIT Bombay Racing Team also came 1st overall amongst international teams, 3rd in the EV Category (Domestic and International) and 4th Overall at FSUK 2020, amongst 73 teams, from over 20 countries.
This is an unprecedented result for any team. This is because IITB Racing is the first Indian team to ever win an Engineering Design Competition at an international Formula Student Competition. This was also the team’s overall best performance scoring 337.2/400 points, just 16 points off the top spot.
This victory is a testament to the brilliance of the team members, all budding engineers and their perseverance that they left no stone unturned to bring this victory to the team. Faculty Advisor, Prof. Amber Shrivastava says, “I have seen the team continuously grow over the last 4 years. I've been involved with them. Their determination to put in extra hours to ensure everything goes better than planned always amazes me. Their hard work has deservedly been awarded by the results they have achieved this year and I am really proud of my students' performance.” When we asked Team Leader his thoughts on this, he said, “There have been multiple lows this year, not spending my final months in the Institute or taking the car we built to the competition at Silverstone. However, we did have the competition virtually replicating many aspects of the competition online. Our team spent days and nights working on getting all designs and presentations ready to ace this event. I couldn’t have asked for a more exhilarating finish to complete three restless years working in this team I’ve learned to call family. A really proud moment for us today and I’m thankful for my team pulling off such a performance, this is just the beginning of something special.”
The IIT Bombay Racing Team is a student-run racing team with 70+ students based out of IIT Bombay. They build India’s fastest Formula-style electric race car, and they race it every year at the Formula Student Competition in the UK.
Formula Student is a student engineering competition held annually in the UK. Student teams from around the world design, build, test, and race a small-scale formula-style racing car. It is Europe’s most established educational engineering competition and celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2018. Backed by industry and high-profile engineers such Patron, Ross Brawn OBE, the competition aims to develop enterprising and innovative young engineers and encourage more young people to take up a career in engineering.
The team looks forward to competing in FSUK 2021 at Silverstone next year, with the aim to better the current result achieved.
