A tribute to The Timeless Icon of IIT Bombay, Prof. T. R. R. Mohan

Prof. T. R. R. Mohan was popularly known as TRRM to his students and colleagues. Prof. Mohan studied M.Sc. (Physics) at Annamalai University, Chidambaram (1961 – 1963). Later he joined Metallurgical Department, IIT Bombay and earned his MTech. in Metallurgical Engineering (1963 – 1965) followed by PhD (1977). Prof. Mohan retired from IIT Bombay in 2005 after 35 years of service. Even though he retired from service but he never really retired remaining highly active advising Industry in Powder Metallurgy, Advanced Ceramics, Bio-ceramics, Diamond tools and other Products used in Automotive and Engineering Industry. 

Prof. Mohan supervised 22 PhD and 107 MTech students and has over 120 publications in conf proceedings and international journals. Prof. Mohan was a visiting professor at University of Southern California Los Angeles (1978-1980) and Oklahoma State University at Stillwater (1993- 1994), USA. Prof. Mohan published several books in the field of ceramics, powder metallurgy and biomaterials. 

He was a consultant for many industries. Prof. Mohan was a Life Member, Past General Secretary, Vice President and President of Powder Metallurgy Association of India (PMAI). Prof. Mohan was the central figure in PMAI for many years which resulted in enhanced activities of PMAI and he also played a key role in helping many people establish ceramics and powder metallurgical industries even if they were not from the core area of metallurgy / materials. He received the life time achievement award from PMAI. Prof. Mohan was also a member of the American Ceramic Society, American Society for Materials (Life Member), Society for Biomaterials & Artificial Organs of India (Life Member), Indian Ceramic society (Life Member). 

Prof. Mohan will always be fondly remembered for being full of life and enjoying every aspect of life. He would go out of the way to help and encourage weaker students by reaching out to every student with unparalleled kindness and consideration. Prof. Mohan emphasized on humanity and generosity in all his engagements. He lived an exemplary life.

Prof. T R R Mohan breathed his last on the 15th April 2021. He is survived by his wife and two daughters and the extended family. May his soul rest in peace. He is etched in the hearts of many as, A Timeless Icon.  

Mr. Kishore Seendripu, (1990, MEMS, H6) a distinguished alumnus of the Institute, has recently established “Prof. T. R. R. MOHAN CHAIR in Material Science & Microelectronics”, in his honour.
