IIT Bombay Researcher Proposes Hybrid Wastewater Management System

Prof Pradip Kalbar, an Associate Professor at the Centre of Urban Science and Engineering (CUSE) at IIT Bombay, proposed using mechanized Sewage Treatment plants (STPs) in conjunction with natural treatment systems as a cost-effective option to prevent dumping of untreated wastewater into rivers. Such a hybrid treatment will also help meet the strict water treatment norms set by the National Green Tribunal in 2019. In his paper published in the journal Clean Technologies and Environmental Policy, Pradip Kalbar describes how successive mechanical and natural treatments can get the wastewater to the prescribed level of biochemical oxygen demand. As per his calculations, the proposed plan would help save over 540 billion units of electricity which is enough to power Mumbai for up to six months.
