Greetings from IIT Bombay!
Wishing you a very happy and prosperous New Year.
December turned out to be a very eventful month as it saw a flurry of events like Institute Alumni Day, Reunions, Student Placement, Inter-IIT Sports Meet, Inter-IIT Cult Meet, Mood Indigo and Techfest. It was a pleasure to meet you at the alumni reunions and the Institute Alumni Day function. I would like to thank you for taking some time off your schedule and joining the events.
I feel proud to inform you that Prof. Viral Acharya (B.Tech. 1995, Computer Science & Engineering) has been appointed as a Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India. Viral is currently a professor at New York University’s Stern School of Business. An acclaimed economist, Viral has been regulary interacting with the economics professors of the Institute. We look forward to welcoming him back to his alma mater soon.
This year’s Alumni Day was a huge success with more than 300 enthusiastic alumni participating in the event. The event started off with Prof. Devang Khakar’s (Director, IIT Bombay) speech as he briefed the gathered alumni about the important achievements of the Institute. He mentioned the important landmark of crossing 10,000 students on rolls this year. On this occasion, the Institute recognised six alumni with Distinguished Service Award (DSA) for their tremendous contribution to the Institute. The details of these distinguished alumni can be found in the article below. The Silver Jubilee Reunion of the Class of 1991 was a record-breaker. The Class has pledged to donate the highest-ever amount of Rs. 8 crores to the Institute as their Legacy Project. About 130 alumni from the Silver Jubilee attended the reunion.
I would like to thank Distinguished Alumnus Pramod Chaudhari for contributing Rs. 2.51 crores towards establishing a ‘Centre for Learning and Teaching’ at IIT Bombay. The Centre will carry out research and development on Teaching and Learning and also work closely with the academic units, students and faculty to enhance teaching methodologies and learning outcomes.
The first phase of student placement was held from 1st to 18th December this year. In spite of economic slowdown, our overall placements statistics proved to be remarkable as nearly 950 students were offered jobs by 275 companies. The average salary at Rs. 11.3 lakhs also showed a healthy growth of over 10% from last year. In an interesting development, for the first time ever, the number of post-graduate students being placed during this phase was greater than the undergraduate students. The second phase of placement will be held during January-June 2017.
IIT Kanpur hosted the 51st Inter-IIT sports meet from 12th to 19th December 2016. IIT Bombay contingent put up a spirited fight and secured an overall 3rd position. Our team was propelled by dominance in table tennis and lawn tennis where our boys team finished 1st and 3rd while the women were runners up in both. IIT Bombay women emerged the overall champions, owing to 1st place finish in Badminton and a 2nd place in volleyball. This year's battle of chess was a spectacle and Bombay emerged victorious as they stood first in that category. Three Cheers to IIT Bombay!
This year, we hosted the first ever Inter-IIT Cultural Meet on 20th and 21st December. A total of 14 IITs participating in this 2 day cultural extravaganza. IIT Bombay came out on top in the overall points table clinching the Inter-IIT Cultural trophy with Kharagpur and Kanpur claiming the second and third spot respectively.
Along with a number of international conferences being held in this month, the Institute also kept with the student activities upbeat as it played host to the much awaited cultural festival, Mood Indigo 2016 and technical extravaganza TechFest 2016. Both events attracted over 100,000 footfalls from all over India and abroad. A little sneak-peak can be found in the below articles.
The Institute continues to attract outstanding talent as new faculty members. Several have joined IIT Bombay in the past. We are pleased to bring a short introduction of Prof. Lalit Kumar, who has recently joined the Energy Science and Engineering department.
We have a host of programs lined up for 2017. These includes some flagship events by our student bodies like E-Summit 2017, Abhyuday-Social Festival of IIT Bombay and the much awaited 'Student Alumni Meet 2017'.
The generous contributions received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute have helped in making an important difference in our endeavour to pursue global excellence. The contributions towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. I look forward to continuing to receive the support and contributions from the your side with same zeal and enthusiasm. Wishing you and your family a happy and prosperous New Year!
