Knowledge Tree: Newsletter October 2017

Dear Friend,

Greetings from IIT Bombay.

The month of September was abuzz with activities on IIT campus. The students burnt midnight oil during the early part of the month when the mid-semester examinations were held. The campus also fully imbibed the spirit of Ganesh Chaturthi with celebrations hosted in most hostels. The Institute celebrated Teacher’s Day on 5th September, where Prof. SP Sukhatme Excellence in Teaching Awards and Dr. P K Patwardhan Technology Development Award were conferred. The chief guest on this occasion was Dr Srikumar Banerjee, Chancellor of Homi Bhabha National Institute, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai.

We feel very proud to inform you that Distinguished Alumnus Colin Gonsalves (B.Tech, Civil Engineering, 1975), Senior Advocate of Supreme Court and founder of Human Rights Law Network has been awarded the Right Livelihood Award for 2017. Widely known as Alternative Nobel Prize, the Right Livelihood Award is conferred to “honour and support those offering practical and exemplary answers to the most urgent challenges facing us today.” According to the Award Foundation, “Colin Gonsalves is recognised for his tireless and innovative use of public interest litigation over three decades to secure fundamental human rights for India’s most marginalised and vulnerable citizens.” The award was announced on September 26, 2017 and made Colin the first Indian rights lawyer to be named for the award. Please join me in congratulating Collin for the well-deserved recognition and for bringing glory to the alma mater.

In order to further enhance the academic collaboration between Taiwan universities and IIT Bombay, a Taiwan Education Center (TEC) has been set up on campus. The TEC was inaugurated on September 22, 2017 by Mr. Chung-Kwang Tien, the Ambassador of Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India. The TEC is expected to facilitate further research collaborations involving Taiwan universities and companies with IIT Bombay. The TEC will also offer opportunities for our students to learn about Taiwan language and culture on campus.

I am also delighted to invite you to Alumination, the annual student-alumni meet, which will be held on October 7-8, 2017. A number of events involving alumni from different walks of life have been organised. Our students are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to participate in various programs and learn from the wisdom of the alumni. I look forward to a large number you participating in Alumination and acting as role models to the current students. The details of the program are available at alumination.sarc-iitb.org.

The Institute hosted a fusion rock concert, entitled Ye India Ka Time Hai, on 2nd September to celebrate 70 years of Independence and freedom and 75 years of the ‘Quit India Movement’. The performers at the concert were Manish J. Tipu's Neo Gharana, a fusion rock band of the Gangs of Wasseypur and Qissa fame. The truly enthralling performance witnessed huge participation from the campus community. The program was organised by the Institute Cultural Council in association with National Film Development Corporation. On 15th September, a Grand Carnatic Classical Vocal Recital was also organized in memory of our retired professors who are not with us anymore. The main artist for the night was Sri Sriram Sastry, a highly regarded up-and-coming vocalist trained in the Rudrapatnam School of Carnatic tradition by the elder of the celebrated Rudrapatnam brothers, Vidwan RN Thyagarajan.

The Institute continues to attract outstanding talent as new faculty members. Several have joined IIT Bombay in the past. We are pleased to bring a short introduction of these new faculty members in the article below.

The generous contributions received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute helps in making an important difference in our endeavour to pursue global excellence. The contributions towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
