Greetings from IIT Bombay.

The month of October was an eventful and a festive one at IIT Bombay. The time of Navratri during the lull following the mid-semester exams saw several festivities on campus.

I am very pleased to again invite you to the Alumni Day celebrations on Sunday, December 24, 2017. The event will start with the Institute Function at 11:00 AM in which Prof. Devang Khakhar, Director, will present annual progress report of the Institute. The Distinguished Service Awards will also be conferred during the function. The Silver Jubilee Legacy Project will be also announced at the function. Your Institute will complete 60 years in 2018, and a number of Diamond Jubilee programs will be announced during the function. I hope to see many of you during the Alumni Day. 

I am also very pleased to invite you to a Distinguished Lecture by Ambassador Suresh K. Goel on UN Reforms: Myth or Reality on Friday, November 3, 2017 at VMCC. Amb. Goel retired as Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs and Director General of Indian Council for Cultural Relations. He has served in various diplomatic positions in Lao PDR, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Egypt and South Africa. He has also served at Permanent Mission of India to UN in New York. The Lecture is being organised in association with Ministry of External Affairs of Government of India.

You will be delighted to know you that IIT Bombay has moved one step up to 34th rank this year in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asia University Rankings. Earlier in June this year, the Institute was ranked 179th in the QS World University Rankings.

The annual student-alumni meet, Alumination was held on 7th and 8th October. The events comprised invited lectures, speed mentoring, mock interviews and group discussions conducted by the alumni. A large number of students participated in the events, which allowed them to see things from a new perspective and provided them the opportunity to hone their skills in an ever-changing world. Alumni Sports weekend was held on 28th October with large participation by the students and alumni. The events were highly competitive in true spirit of the Institute’s culture. 'Avenues' the annual International business festival was organized by Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management on 27th-29th October. The well-known actor and producer Raveena Tandon and many other leaders shared their success stories to motivate the young students. As part of celebration of Swachh Bharat Mission of Government of India, Swachhta Pakhwada was observed during October 1-15, 2017 in the Institute and it saw good participation from the campus residents.

Professor Howard Stone, Donald R. Dixon ’69 and Elizabeth W. Dixon Professor at Princeton University delivered the Indira Foundation Distinguished Lecture entitled Beauty and Surprises in Fluid Mechanics: Nature, Research and Technology on October 30, 2017. Prof. Stone is a highly acclaimed expert in Fluid Mechanics that finds a variety of application in different fields of science, engineering and medicine. Prof. Stone also interacted with faculty members with research activities in Fluid Mechanics in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Biosciences and Bioengineering and Chemistry during his stay at IIT Bombay.

Dr. Abhinav Chandrachud Advocate Bombay High Court and Author of 'Republic of Rhetoric: Free Speech and the Constitution of India' delivered an Institute Lecture on the Right to Privacy. Another Institute Lecture on ‘How India Works. Caste, Community and Capitalism’ was delivered by Prof. Thomas Blom Hansen, Professor of Anthropology at Stanford University, USA on October 27.

The Institute continues to attract outstanding talent as new faculty members. Several have joined IIT Bombay in the past. We are pleased to bring a short introduction of these new faculty members in the article below.

The generous contributions received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute helps in making an important difference in our endeavour to pursue global excellence. The contributions towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
