Knowledge Tree: Newsletter January 2018

Dear Friends,

Greetings from IIT Bombay.

I wish you a very happy and prosperous New Year.

December has been a hectic month which saw a flurry of events like Alumni Day, Alumni Reunions, Student Placement, Inter-IIT Sports Meet, Mood Indigo and Techfest. It was a real pleasure to have met many of you during the Alumni Day function and reunions. The Alumni Day program included the Director’s report and conferment of Distinguished Service Awards. The Silver Jubilee reunion of Class of 1992 was held on 22-24 December. Breaking all previous Silver Jubilee reunion records, over 180 alumni from the batch assembled for their reunion. The batch also created a new record by pledging to contribute Rs 9.4 Crore towards the Silver Jubilee Legacy Project to help attract the best young faculty to our Institute and to support students through a variety of programs. On behalf of the Institute and all alumni, I thank the batch for their immense contributions. The institute also conferred the Distinguished Service Awards to Mr. Milind Mhaiskar (B.Tech., ChE, 1990) and Mr. Saket Gadia (B.Tech., Meta, 2002) for exceptional service to their alma mater. A special highlight of the Alumni Day was the reunion of the pioneer batch of IIT Bombay, the class of 1962. Special mementos were presented to the eight members of the batch who attended the Alumni Day function.

The 1st phase of student placement was held from December 1 onwards. The Institute witnessing exceptional placement, with 1000+ job top-notch offered to the class of 2018. This is surely a stamp of confidence of the choicest companies in our graduates. About 250 companies from India and abroad visited IIT Bombay during the first phase of student placement. Many IIT startups also recruited our students. The second phase of placement will be held during January-June 2018.

The 52nd Inter IIT Sports Meet was held at IIT Madras from 15th to 23rd December 2017. It ended with joy and glory as IIT Bombay emerged as the Overall Champions by a wide margin.  The final points tally in the Men’s Championship 2017 show IIT Bombay at the top with 103 points. In a close-contest, the Women’s Championship was won by IIT Madras with IIT Bombay bagged the second position with the same number of points. Congratulations to the entire contingent for keeping the flag of IIT Bombay flying high!

Our cultural festival Mood Indigo’s 47th edition was also held this month. It ended on 25th December after 4 long and fun-filled days. The event left the audience exhausted and spoiled for choice. Like every year, students from more than 1700 colleges across the country and abroad descended in hordes, as the festival recorded a footfall of over 1.4 lakh. IIT Bombay also hosted Techfest, Asia's largest Science and Technology Festival on December 29-31. Techfest witnessed the lectures by Distinguished Alumnus Manohar Parrikar, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Goa as well also several other dignitaries. A special highlight was the lecture by Sophia, the first Humanoid Robot to have received citizenship of a country.

The Institute continues to attract outstanding talent as new faculty members. Several have joined IIT Bombay in the past. We are pleased to give you a short introduction in the following article.

The generous contributions received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute helps in making an important difference in our endeavor to pursue global excellence. The contributions towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
