Dear Friend,
Greetings from IIT Bombay!
I am very delighted to present the December issue of our newsletter. The onset of winter is here and with it an atmosphere of celebration too. The students of IIT-B have been through with their End Term examinations and even though the official term has ended, would be found tinkering throughout the campus, engaged in a multitude of technical and student activities. This goes on to show that our campus restricts its wholesome education neither by months nor syllabus.
I take immense pride in introducing a great new initiative by the Student Alumni Relations Cell (SARC) called ‘Know Your Alumni’, a video interview series, where the SARC body interacts with Alumni to gain an understanding about their achievements and the struggles that they overcame to earn their throne among the stars. The 1st video explored the world of Mr. Harish Badami, former Director at ACC Limited, former MD at Rohm and Haas company. You can watch the KYA video here
Our beloved alumnus, Mr. Hemant Kanakia, recently had one of his articles published in The Hindu, where he penned his mind on the future of Indian industries. He spoke on the ‘Make in India’ idea and implored to not blindly follow the capital intensive industries of USA or the labor intensive ones of China and rather look into disruptive technology intensive industries. “If ‘Make in India’ is to succeed, it needs to encompass ‘Make it the Indian Way’.”
The foundation stone laying ceremony of ‘Rahul Bajaj Technology Innovation Centre’ at IIT Bombay was held on 14th November. The Chief Guest, Mr Rahul Bajaj, Chairman of Bajaj Group, unveiled the plaque and 3D model of the ‘Rahul Bajaj Technology Innovation Centre’.
The Institute organized an Institute Distinguished Lecture in Chemical Engineering (in memory of Professor C.V. Seshadri) on 26th November. The speaker, Prof. Animangsu Ghatak, HOD of IIT Kanpur’s Department of Chemical Engineering, spoke on the topic of “Adhesion and Fracture of Soft Materials”.
The Diamond Jubilee Cultural Task Force of IIT Bombay held a concert by the famous Indian fusion band Indian Ocean on the evening of 24th November, Saturday in Open Air Theatre (OAT) of SAC. In addition to high-spirited and adrenaline-pumped students, the show was also attended by senior faculty, officials and staff of the Institute. Comprising of promising artists Nikhil Rao, Amit Kilam, Rahul Ram, Himanshu Joshi and Tuhin Chakraborty, this 28-year old band is widely known for their experimental nature and their unique style of seamlessly coupling Indo-rock fusion with jazz-spiced rhythms.
IIT Bombay hosts a number of Alumni reunions every year which mark a major milestone in the lives of our alumni and memories of our Institute. This is IIT Bombay's Diamond Jubilee year and that calls for a grander scale of jubilations. This December, a total of 10 Reunions would be orchestrated simultaneously, the schedule for which is as follows:
21 December - Batch of 1993
23 December - Batch of 1962
23 December - Batch of 1963
23 December - Batch of 1968
23 December - Batch of 1978
23 December - Batch of 1988
23 December - Batch of 1998
23 December - Batch of 2003
23 December - Batch of 2008
23 December - Batch of 2013
We implore all the respective batch alumni to join us in the revels along with their family and relive their campus days.
Only with constant perseverance and tenacity, we can make a mark in the world as an Institute of eminence. Generous contributions received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute are key to bolstering our endeavors to pursue global excellence. Contributions towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
