Knowledge Tree: April 2019

Dear Friend,

Greetings from IIT Bombay!

I am pleased to present you the April edition of our newsletter. The conclusion of the grueling mid-semester examinations paved a way for a bunch of cultural activities and social initiatives in March. The whole Institute resonated with the festive ambiance of Holi and the rejuvenating spring season.

To mark the momentous occasion of the Institute completing its diamond jubilee, the Foundation Day was celebrated on March 8 this year. It was presided by Prof. S.P. Sukhatme, Former Director, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and Former Chairman, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) as the chief guest. The Institute conferred the ‘Distinguished Alumnus Award’ to 14 of our alumni, for their remarkable contribution to their professions and society. Eight young alumni were awarded ‘Young Alumnus Achievers Award’ for having made outstanding achievements in their chosen field of work and are below the age of 40. The ‘Prof. S.C. Bhattacharya Award for Excellence in Research in Pure Sciences’ and the ‘Prof. H.H. Mathur Award for Excellence in Research in Applied Sciences’ were conferred to faculty members to recognize their outstanding contribution to research in pure science disciplines. The celebrations also included the unveiling of the Diamond Jubilee Brochure, Infrastructure Calendar, the unveiling of Chair professorship Booklet and the Launch of “Giving Back”.

With an extremely heavy heart, a condolence meeting was organized in the honor of IIT Bombay’s Distinguished Alumnus, Goa Chief Minister, and former Defense Minister Shri. Manohar Parrikar on March 18 at 5:00 pm in the PC Saxena Auditorium. He was an exemplar of integrity, diligence, and perseverance.  The news of his unfortunate demise moved and perturbed every resident of the campus as they paid homage to the illustrious alumnus and the role model.

The Hostel Affairs Council launched an excellent platform, the ‘ReachUs’ portal, for sharing offers, discounts and exclusive services for the Institute’s students, faculty and staff. It is expected to increase the resourcefulness and provide cost-effective amenities to the campus residents.

Kaladarshan, the annual fine arts and photography exhibition of IIT Bombay took place on March 9-10,2019. The theme of the exhibition was   ‘Unleash the Magic’ within you. It enthralled its audience with a stupendous display of aesthetic craft exhibitions, inspiring workshops and photography galleries. It displayed several riveting initiatives ranging from beautifying the main road with delightful artworks to interactive photoshoots. Such events indeed portray the IITB’s finesse and dexterity in fine crafts despite being renowned as a premier technical institute.

In an effort to resolve water-related problems for the society, Water Innovation Centre: Technology, Research and Education (WICTRE) in collaboration with the faculty members of IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderabad, NCL Pune and PDPU Gandhinagar  was inaugurated on March 26 . A water symposium and panel discussions were organized on the same day as a part of the DJ activities. WICTRE has been funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India.

A distinguished lecture was organized by Prof. Shubha Tole on March 12, 2019 involving an insightful discussion on topics ‘Towards a Blueprint for Building the Brain’ and ‘What is it like to be a woman in science: a session for men and women’. The Institute also organized a lecture by Mr. Kenji Hiramatsu, ambassador of Japan to India on March 11. It dwelled upon the ‘transformed partnership between Japan and India’. A significance of the strategic relationship and cooperation between the two nations in terms of economy and education was also discussed. On March 7, IIT Bombay conducted a distinguished lecture by Prof. Dominique Bonvin, EPFL on ‘Real-time optimization’, at the P. C. Saxena Auditorium.

The social body Abhyuday commemorated social, cultural, economic and political achievements of women through its event ‘Celebrating HER’. They invited prominent women dignitaries with outstanding achievements in their respective fields to conduct a lively discussion on March 8, the International Women’s Day. Such events showcase the Institute’s commitment towards reducing gender disparities.

I am proud to announce that IIT-B will now also offer a new Master’s course in the interdisciplinary field of ‘Educational Technology’ commencing from Fall 2019. The program will screen learners from diverse backgrounds and enthusiastic towards improving teaching technology. It will help refine the pedagogy and will focus on developing innovative solutions for bettering the students’ learning experience.

The generous contribution received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute helps in making an important difference in our endeavor to pursue global excellence. The contribution towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
