August 2020

Dear Friend,

Greetings from IIT Bombay!

Hope you are healthy and safe.

Hoping to soon escape from this fearsome situation presented in front of us, we plan to welcome August with the same enthusiasm as the city welcomes the monsoon rain. Although the times are tough, there is a glimmer of hope in the darkness that things will bounce back to a brighter future in the forthcoming days. Hence without any further ado, we will be starting the Autumn Semester 2020-2021 in online mode from August 10, so that our (current/on-roll) students don’t suffer any academic loss due to the crisis.

Corontine, a homegrown app, has been created by Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan and Prof. Manjesh Hanawal to solve contact tracing without privacy issues for the campus residents. Also, to accumulate data on what restrictions should be imposed on the campus residents and off-campus workers, a contact tracing team has been constituted by Prof. Pradeep from Aerospace Department, Prof. Debjani Paul from Bioscience and Bioengineering and Mr.Sajith, Institute Safety Officer as the core members. Moreover, telemedicine services are being provided for not so urgent health issues.

To herald the graduation and ceremonially welcome the latest batch of students-Class of 2020 to the family of IIT Bombay alumni, the ‘Institute E-Valedictory Function’ was held on July 18, virtually owing to our invisible foe-Covid19. The keynote address was delivered by our esteemed alumni Mr. Toos Daruvala, Co-CEO of MIO Partners, and the in-house investment management arm of McKinsey & Company, also the recipient of Distinguished Alumni Award in 2014. The other speaker was our Young Alumni Achiever Awardee, Mr. Rahul Singh who is the Co-Founder and Vice President (VP) Engineering of ideaForge Technology. Delivering the valedictory address, they reminisced their campus life and shared some experiences which have helped shape them. To promote the feeling of giving back, Institute came up with an innovative and noble project named “Class of 2020 project” that will provide benefits to our fellow students in the Institute. The Institute has kindly agreed to contribute to the project an amount equivalent to the expenditure incurred in holding the Valedictory function physically on the campus.

Technical GCs held this year witnessed cut-throat competition and participation from a good number of students from different hostels, with finally H5 paving its way to the prestigious Tech Cup 2019-20 with H4 and H9 standing at second and third position, respectively.

As the internship season is round the corner, our students are pouring in their blood, sweat, and tears for a successful headstart. To minimize the burden on their shoulders many webinars, online lecture series were conducted by some of the most inspiring leaders like Prof. Andrew Yan-Tak Ng, co-founder of Coursera and deeplearning.ai. He is the mastermind behind Google Brain and has taught millions of eager students across the globe about the impact and future of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The Institute Technical Council (ITC) and Undergraduate Academic Council (UGAC) launched the fourth edition of Learners’ Space, aiming to familiarize the curious minds with various areas that spike their interest, through meticulously planned online material and webinars along with assignments. It offered a plethora of courses ranging from technical studies like python, machine learning, LaTex to non-technical curriculum covering finance, consulting, analytics, and management.

Continuing the spirit of sports even in these trying times, Aavahan, IITB conducted the first edition of the Online Open Chess Tournament on International Chess Day on July 20. Along with that, the Fitness Club IITB is providing free subscription of Mindhouse, which is a meditation-based mental wellness platform, as, amidst these dull days, the necessity of a healthy mind cannot be overstated. With a unique learning opportunity, the Institute Cultural Council presented The Summer School of Cult 2020 to help our budding artists learn from professionals.

Innovation, Design, and Technology make up the perfect recipe for any idea; following this mantra, Tinkerer’s Laboratory has organized a month-long extendable workshop on Design Thinking: Design to Disrupt. The workshop is being conducted by Prof. Anurag Mairal, the Director of Global Outreach Programs at Stanford Byers Centre for Biodesign, equipping the students with the perfect tools for evolving a framework useful in many scenarios of their subsequent professional life.

The generous contribution received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute helps in making an important difference in our endeavor to pursue global excellence. The contribution towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of the utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability. You are most welcome to make a voluntary contribution to various initiatives through https://acr.iitb.ac.in/donation/
