May 2021

Dear Friend,

Greetings from IIT Bombay!

Hope you all are healthy and safe.

It pains me to say that the last month also witnessed a tough time for the Institute functionaries due to the havoc caused by COVID across many parts of India. Our extended IIT Bombay family has been hit badly, and though we are unaware of the exact numbers, our thoughts are with everyone who is going through a tough time during these testing times.

We had to stop vaccination in the beginning of the month due to the surge in covid cases swamping our hospital. Nonetheless, now that cases have gone down due to a timely lockdown from April 14th, we have once again been approved to restart covid vaccination as a government facility.  However, this will depend on when the BMC supplies us with vaccines, which we hope will realise soon. To ensure our students can get access to vaccines, we have been exploring all possibilities, but we think it will take some time; therefore we request patience.

The atmosphere for students around the end of the month turned quite sombre due to the commencement of their end semester exams, which were conducted in the online mode over the last couple of semesters. However, due to the current situation, it was unanimously decided to give students, who were affected by the pandemic in any way, the opportunity to opt for a re-exam at a later date.

Notwithstanding, this month has brought its share of good as well. During FY 2020-21, IIT Bombay  witnessed a massive increase of 68 % in the IP filings. We filed 262 IP during this year as against 156 of the last year. The number of granted patents have also increased to 120 as against 67  of  the last year. The increase in trademarks indicates more licensing possibilities. In addition to this, in view of the national emergency in India with respect to pandemic and Oxygen production, Prof Milind Atrey, Dean (R&D), took up a pilot project to evaluate the separation of Nitrogen from Oxygen. Spantech Engineers, who deal with PSA Nitrogen and Oxygen plant production, agreed to partner with IIT Bombay and Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE) on this pilot project and installed the required plant components as a skid at IIT Bombay for evaluation. The initial tests have shown promising results, and I am delighted to inform you that we have received a large number of messages impressing interest in the technology from various groups, to extend this work for the benefit of our country.

The laurels brought back this month were also umpteen. IIT Bombay achieved the first runner-up position at the 9th Inter IIT Tech Meet, winning 9 medals in total. In the Solar Decathlon Challenge organized by the US Department of Energy, ‘Team Shunya’ of IIT Bombay clinched the Runners Up title in the 2021 edition of the ‘Design Challenge’ in the division of ‘Attached Housing’. SINE also celebrated its 17th anniversary recently, and we fervently recollected how its foundation has been laid down and built upon trust, devotion, and hard work of all those associated including alumni with its existence over the years.

Despite it being an online semester, this didn’t stop students from having fun as well. This month saw a flurry of online cultural events and activities. It included the first-ever virtual “AIDS” (Annual Insync’s Dance Show) AIDS2021, showcasing stellar performances by our students. The “Annual Standup Showcase” StandUp2021 also provided a much-needed evening of laughter during these tough times, whereas “Kaladarshan”- The Annual Photography and Fine arts Exhibition KD2021, nurtured the creativity of our students via a one-of-a-kind Virtual 3D Exhibition.

The generous contribution received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute helps make an important difference in our endeavor to pursue global excellence. The contribution towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
