September 2021

Dear friend,

Greetings from IIT Bombay!

Hope you are healthy and safe.

As the Covid cases show a steady decline, it gives us all a new ray of hope for the coming days. Vaccinations is in full swing, and the IIT Bombay hospital continues to serve everyone. The campus continues to welcome final year masters and Ph.D. students. UG students with resource constraints are also being called in phases to ensure complete safety on the premises.

As all the other batches settled into their academic schedules, we also had to bid a bittersweet adieu to the batch of 2021. The online convocation held with virtual avatars was live streamed on YouTube for everyone to access. Prof. Geoffrey Hinton, FRS, from the University of Toronto, kindly graced us with his presence as the chief guest and accompanied us to wish our beloved students success and happiness for their future.

We also successfully kicked off the ASMP programme, which guides our intern and placement seeking students. An overwhelming number of alumni came forward to extend their guidance to these students.

IIT Bombay signed an innovative partnership agreement with its alumni organizations - IITB Alumni Association (IITBAA) and IITB Heritage Foundation (IITBHF) to fund, design, and build a new 1,000 – 1,500 room world-class Hostel Complex. The MoU was signed by representatives of IIT Bombay and its alumni organizations. We are thankful to our alumni for their zeal to contribute to their alma mater.

We are delighted to inform you that CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) has selected three of our faculty members as women achievers in STEM this year from all over India in both academia and industry -- Late Prof. Rinti Banerjee, Prof. Maryam Shojaei and Prof. Suparna Mukherjee. Congratulations to Prof. Maryam Shojaei and Prof. Suparna Mukherjee.

The Gender Cell at IIT Bombay has been working very hard to make the experiences of our students on the campus a lot more pleasant. Recently they have curated a MOOCs course on gender awareness. The Academic Senate of the Institute has now made it a zero credit, pass/no-pass compulsory self-study course for all students I am sure this course will help our students appreciate and respect the opposite gender. We hope to establish a similar training module for all our employees soon.

The generous contribution received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute helps make an important difference in our endeavour to pursue global excellence. The contribution towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc., are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
